Group Career Counseling
Dr. Emily Bullock Yowell and Dr. Melanie Leuty regularly provide training in a manualized approach to group career counseling. This group operates as a part of the career counseling specialty clinic in the USM Community Counseling and Assessment Clinic, the main training clinic for the Counseling Psychology graduate programs. A recent grant from the American Psychological Foundation has allowed us to expand this service to community members. Part of our recruitment of clients for this group is managed online.
The group's 5 sessions are based on the Cognitive Information Processing Approach to career decision making with a strong emphasis on integrating assessment results. All intakes and group sessions are held in the Community Counseling & Assessment Clinic. Trained counselors perform a specialized intake with potential clients, helping to screen each client for appropriate inclusion in the group. Session content includes an exploration of metacognitions, self-knowledge & values, options knowledge, and decision making techniques.

The Training
If you would like to attend an upcoming training, please contact Dr. Yowell. At this time, any student enrolled in a practicum course in on the Counseling Psychology graduate programs may see career group clients. Counseling Psychology graduate students not currently in practicum may attend the training as a learning experience.
The training introduces counselors to the intake process and manualized group counseling process. Counselors are also trained in applicable objective and informal assessment techniques (e.g., Strong Interest Inventory, Minnesota Importance Questionnaire, NEO-PI-R, Career Thoughts Inventory).
